“Mummy, mummy please may I go out to play?”
These words were the most echoed across households when we were growing up. Or we can always say before technology took over and play-stations ,Video games and smart phone games became the pseudo playground for kids. I remember kids would step out of their homes to play in the open areas once their homework was done or even if it was not done. And what all did that playing demand? Well, lots of running, jumping, skipping, shouting, sweating and more!
And isn’t that how kids should behave?
While technology is great and it surely aids in multiple aspects of life – education, being the most primary and important – it needs to be moderated or it is sure to get all-consuming. And by that we mean that children must be encouraged to actually play “catch me if you can” outdoors than on iPads – temple runner or angry birds games! No kidding!

In growing kids, certain skills need to be developed. These include proper hand-and-eye co-ordination, agility, flexibility, the proper growth and use of all the muscles in the body. And how is this achieved? With sufficient physical exercise of course!
The right amount of playtime outdoors, in the sun, ensures the right amount of exposure to the sun, a better posture due to increased flexibility, reduced muscle stiffness and soreness, increased relaxation. Additionally, gymnastics and yoga aid the cause of better fitness & health too.
Social and Other Benefits:
Playing outdoors invariably means playing with other kids and this means the development of social skills. Sharing, playing in teams, not listening to the bully, making best friends, fighting, coming to agree on the games to play – these obvious yet important social and interpersonal skills are the ones kids will imbibe when playing outdoors.
So, staying physically active not only makes the child physically fit but socially and psychologically fit too! Keeping diseases at bay, improving strength and boosting self-esteem are many advantages of staying active. Also, children who are taught to be physically active remain healthy throughout their adult life.
